How to detect nitrous oxide cylinders in the garbage truck?

Since 2016, the sale of nitrous oxide for recreational use has been regulated in the Dutch Commodities Act, resulting in the establishment of rules and guidelines regarding its sale, distribution, and use. These measures were mainly aimed at recreational use and protecting minors from the risks of nitrous oxide use.

In addition to the health risks, the use of nitrous oxide also poses safety risks, especially when nitrous oxide cylinders are not disposed of safely and end up among household waste. Nitrous oxide cylinders can explode when exposed to high temperatures, such as those in waste incinerators. This not only endangers the waste incinerator itself but also the staff and the environment.

Detecting nitrous oxide cylinders in a garbage truck is therefore a challenge, but there are several steps that can be taken to do so.

Firstly, regular visual inspections of the collected waste can be conducted, with staff trained to recognize and report suspicious objects. Additionally, if feasible and safe, staff can manually sort the waste during the loading of the garbage truck, allowing for more accurate checks for the presence of nitrous oxide cylinders and other hazardous items.

Alternatively, the use of X-ray technology can be a solution. Bavak provides X-ray scanners for trucks that can scan the contents of a 'garbage truck' and thus make the nitrous oxide cylinders visible. Subsequently, the cylinders can be removed from the waste because their exact location is known.

Detecting nitrous oxide cylinders in a garbage truck requires a combination of technology and training plus cooperation with relevant authorities. By implementing these measures, the safety of the staff and the environment can be ensured.
